Substitute Eligibility FAQs

A:  A substitute teaching license is issued by the Ohio State Board of Education to applicants holding a bachelor's degree or higher to individuals who complete a satisfactory criminal background check from the FBI and Ohio BCI.

A:  Yes! You can sub as an Educational Aide in the ESC preschool classrooms and special education classrooms.

Please Note:  Stark County ESC has set a policy that students who are education majors and in their LAST YEAR of college, can apply to be a substitute teacher in Stark County under the Temporary Non-Bachelor's Sub License.  For students who hold a Pre-Service Permit, Stark County ESC is allowing them to sub only in the district where they are doing their student teaching.

You should begin by applying through the ESC website, and you will be contacted via email for any additional information/documentation.

A:  Individuals who hold a state issued substitute teaching license can substitute at any grade level or subject area PK-12.  However, you can choose your grade level preference on your ESC application.

A: No worries, many new substitutes feel unsure about higher level subjects, preschool, foreign language, career tech, or special education classes.  The Stark County ESC offers a substitute training orientation that covers a wide range of topics to help increase your confidence and classroom management skills.  For short term assignments, it is far more important to feel confident in managing a class of students than having expertise in the content.

A: Long-term substitutes are typically hired directly by the district and commonly are selected based on alignment with content qualifications.  In general, the district will typically interview candidates for long-term substitute positions.

A: Click the appropriate school year block for required documents.  As a NEW substitute, your first step is to complete the ESC online application and attach your official college transcript showing bachelor's conferred date.  Upon submission, you will receive a follow-up email with additional information.
