Occupational Therapy (OT)

The primary focus of Occupational Therapy at the Stark County Educational Service Center is to enhance a student's ability to progress within their curriculum.  We work closely with the educational staff to develop programs that are carried out in the classroom or school environment.  We also provide direct services in a small group or individualized setting.  These services may include improving, developing, or restoring functions impaired or lost through illness, injury, or deprivation.  Occupational therapy addresses self-help/adaptive living skills (e.g. eating, dressing), positioning (e.g. sitting appropriately in class), sensory-motor processing (e.g. using the senses and muscles), fine motor (e.g. writing, cutting), life skills, training/vocational skills, assistive technology/adaptive equipment needs and social/emotional skills.

Our occupational therapy department is comprised of both occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants.  The occupational therapist (OT) provides initial evaluations and re-evaluations, develops goals/objectives for each student, provides direct and consultative therapy, recommends adaptive equipment or assistive technology needs and supervises occupational therapy assistants.  Our occupational therapy assistants (OTA) provide direct and consultative services under the supervision of the occupational therapist and assist with modifying the student's environment for learning and adaptive equipment.  Both the OT and OTA collaborate with the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team members to ensure that student needs are met.
