Assistive Technology, Augmentative/Alternative Communication (ATAAC) Team


Who are the members of the ATAAC Team?

The core team members, provided through the department of Special Needs/Student Services, are comprised of the following individuals:

  • Dr. Sue Grogan-Johnson, Consultant and ATAAC Team Speech/Language Pathologist
  • Cis Schumacher, M.Ed. Autism/Behavior and Assistive Technology Facilitator


What is Assistive Technology?

Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability.  The term does not include a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of that device.

What are the types of Assistive Technology that a student will  require?

There are over 20,000 types of assistive technology devices available for people with disabilities!  The types of technology needs often fall into one of the categories listed below:

  • Positioning/computer access (writing, learning, studying)
  • Adaptive daily living skills
  • Augmentative/alternative communication devices, mobile technology
  • Assistive listening devices
  • Visual aids
  • Mobility


What are Assistive Technology Services?

Assistive technology service means any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.
