The role of physical therapy within the school setting is to ensure that each student can safely and independently access his/her school environment. The physical therapy department at the Stark County ESC provides therapy services to 13 school districts. Students with disabilities such as Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, and Muscular Dystrophy from preschool through high school are served by the staff of two Physical Therapists and five Physical Therapy Assistants.
The physical therapist and assistant work closely with parents and teachers to develop goals, objectives, and treatment programs that meet the needs of each student. Therapists focus on gross motor, coordination, balance, range of motion, strength, mobility, and playground skills. They also work closely with the physical education teachers to ensure that each student can participate with their peers to the best of their ability. In addition, therapists fabricate lower extremity braces, assist in obtaining wheelchair quotes, and help families find the necessary funding sources for the equipment their child requires. Staff are always available to the teachers and aides to train them on proper lifting and transfer skills, positional skills, and the care and usage of the child’s adaptive equipment.
The physical therapy department is committed to working in collaboration with the schools in developing quality educational programs, providing support and delivering quality services.
