The Stark County Educational Service Center maintains a licensed Substitute Teacher Assistant/Educational Aide list for the Stark County ESC county-wide preschool and special education classes located in the following school districts:
Brown Local, Canton Local, Fairless Local, Jackson Local, Lake Local, Louisville City, Marlington Local, Minerva Local, Northwest Local, Plain Local, RG Drage Career Tech Ctr., Sandy Valley Local, Tuslaw Local, and Portage Montessori.
To be eligible to substitute for any or all of these classes, you will need to complete an ONLINE APPLICATION, upload required documents, and provide a paper copy of your background check (both BCI and FBI).

The Substitute Teacher Assistant/Aide application must be completed and updated annually for your name to be placed on the list making you eligible for substitute work. Be sure to remember your username and password when creating your account in Recruit & Hire so you can easily update your personal information and preferences in future years.
- VALID Ohio Educational Aide Permit with ESEA Endorsement OR Valid Ohio Teaching or Substitute License issued by Ohio Department of Education
If you do not hold a valid standard teaching license or substitute teaching license, you will be required to hold an Educational Aide Permit. For directions to apply for initial or renewal license/permit, click on the user manual below. Be sure to use Stark County ESC IRN# 049825 for the superintendent’s electronic signature.

IMPORTANT: Stark County ESC requires all Educational Aide Permit holders to be ESEA qualified. Click here for more information on ESEA.
When applying for initial or renewal Educational Aide Permit or Substitute Teacher License, be sure to use Stark County ESC IRN# 049825 for the superintendent’s electronic signature.
NOTE: If you have held a 1-year Educational Aide Permit for a minimum of two years, you are eligible to apply for a 4-year Educational Aide Permit.
- Copy of High School Diploma or Official College Transcript.
If you are providing college transcripts, uploaded transcripts should be legible, in PDF format (no JPEG), and include the registrar’s signature. When scanning a multi-page transcript, create ONE document file that includes ALL pages (front/back, including key/legend).One PDF document per college transcript.
NOTE:If needed, our office can scan your official transcript into PDF format for you.
If you are applying for a permit or license for the first time, you will also need to upload your official transcript to your SAFE account at Ohio Department of Education.
- Fingerprinting/Background Check
Stark County ESC offers fingerprinting services by appointment only.

If you had fingerprinting/background check completed within the past 365 days AND also sent electronically to Ohio Department of Education for licensure, paper copies of both the BCI (Ohio) and FBI (national) results will be accepted, but we must have a copy in our office.
